At one of the "less-happy" times in her life – five months after her divorce from Tom Cruise – Nicole Kidman said, "You'd think the last thing I'd want to do was play a woman struggling with depression and madness who ultimately kills herself." But she decided to take on the role of tragic author Virginia Woolf in The Hours nonetheless, telling herself that such a project – parallel stories of three women searching for meaning in their lives – would likely go unnoticed.

She remembers: "I really thought, 'At least it's a small movie and if it doesn't work, nobody will see it'… I just didn't think this sort of movie would garner that kind of attention." Ten Oscar nominations later – including nods for Nicole, director Stephen Daldry and Julianne Moore – critics and moviegoers who praised the film proved the star wrong.

"One of the things that is so rewarding and exciting about this film, is it is about stuff that's important," explains co-star Julianne. "It's about our lives and who we love, and how we live… This is not a movie about spaceships."

The film, which also stars Meryl Streep, has proved to have wide appeal. The Hours is aimed at "intelligent women", says the movie's producer Scott Rudin, "and whoever else wants to go."
