The hard-nosed lady cop was the bane of London's criminal fraternity from 1992 to 1997

Britain's TV villains had better clean up their acts, as hard-bitten detective Jane Tennison is back. Veteran actress Helen Mirren is to reprise her role as London's toughest cop in Prime Suspect 6, which will be raiding prime time ratings sometime soon.

"Countless fans have asked if Helen will do another Prime Suspect", said executive producer Rebecca Eaton. "Now we can answer with a resounding 'yes', and assure them that this new Prime Suspect will be worth the wait.

Filming of the new series, which sees our heroine promoted to overseer of all murder investigations, is to begin next month. Jane's uncompromising commitment to justice puts her at odds with the political demands of her new job, however.

Between 1992 and 1997, Jane Tennison became a favourite with viewers on both sides of the Atlantic. The inimitable Helen Mirren won an Emmy for the role, while the show itself took home the miniseries gong on three separate occasions.
