After being silenced for seven years, legendary songbird Julie Andrews has once again flexed her vocals on screen. The actress, who was restricted to speaking only parts and thought she would never sing again after undergoing an operation in 1997 to remove a cyst from her throat, breaks into song in her new movie Princess Diaries 2.
"She nailed (it) on the first take. I saw crew members with tears in their eyes," said the film's musical supervisor Dawn Soler. While the film's composer, Larry Grossman, admitted the piece was designed not to be too challenging, being written in just one octave, the result seems to have been a revelation. "She told me it works beautifully," he said.
Princess Diaries 2 continues the tale of an American schoolgirl who inherits the throne of a small European country and is prepared for her new role by Julie's character.
Now 68, the British star won a best actress Oscar and a BAFTA for her role as the singing governess in 1964 flick Mary Poppins, while the soundtrack album for 1965's The Sound Of Music dominated the charts for months.
