There used to be a time when doting fans collected the autographs of their favourite celebrities. These days, things are more up close and personal, with stars offering up their underwear, rather than their moniker, to enthusiastic followers.

Now Pirates Of The Caribbean hunk Johnny Depp has joined their ranks, donating a pair of black undies - described as a Y-front/boxers cross – for a charity auction. The sale goes hand in hand with a charity revue entitled A Celebration Of Childhood, organised by Johnny’s Libertine co-star Tom Hollander.

Funds raised on the night will go to Helen House, an independently funded home from home care centre for children with serious illnesses and their families, which Tom’s sister and two-year-old niece have used.

Also donating articles to go under the hammer are Sam Mendes, Kate Winslet, Pierce Brosnan, Judi Dench and Liam Neeson. Meanwhile, fellow thesps Bill Nighy, Francesca Annis, Michael Gambon and Jeremy Irons are among those contributing to the on stage activities at the Oxford playhouse event.
