Tom Cruise has once again shown himself to be a man of the people, by spending three hours chatting to fans at the UK premiere of his latest film. The silver screen hunk came to London to promote his new flick Collateral, and the 3,000-strong crowd that gathered in Leicester Square to see him was not left disappointed.

The 42-year-old arrived ahead of his co-stars Jamie Foxx and Jada Pinkett-Smith, so that he would have plenty of time to mingle. He also made a series of calls from fans' mobile phones, much to the delight of the throng. "It's great to be here," said the actor. "I think I've beaten my record, it's definitely been three hours. And I've turned up without a date tonight so that should give the ladies a chance."

In the movie he plays a contract killer who hires a taxi to ferry him about Los Angeles while he makes a series of hits. Needless to say his unwitting cab driver is faced with something of a problem if he is to stop the villain and save his own skin.

Relations between the movie's two leading men are somewhat better in real life than they are on the screen. "Tom never has a problem meeting fans," said Jamie. "He comes down and shakes peoples hands all the time." And the Texas-born performer was delighted to be paying a visit to Britain: "London is the best place to have a premiere," he enthused. "Sometimes people can get a bit jaded, but people here always come down and have a good time."
