Clint Eastwood outpunched the competition at Sunday night's Oscar ceremony, winning the gongs for best movie and best director. His 30-year-old leading lady Hilary Swank landed the second Academy Award of her career, thanks to her portrayal of an aspiring boxer in Million Dollar Baby, while movie veteran Morgan Freeman was named winner of the trophy for best supporting actor.

It was far from a one-horse race, though, with Martin Scorsese's The Aviator taking the honours in five different categories. Cate Blanchett's decision to bring along one of Katherine Hepburn's gloves as a good luck charm paid off - she won best supporting actress for her portrayal of the silver screen icon.

"When you play someone as terrifyingly well-known as Katharine Hepburn, it's a collaborative effort," she said. "And thank you of course to Ms Hepburn - the longevity of her career I think is inspiring to everyone."

Best actor Jamie Foxx likewise paid tribute to the real-life performer who inspired his winning turn in Ray. The 37-year-old, who broke down in tears when he was declared best actor, was honoured with a standing ovation for his uncanny portrayal of the soul legend. "Give it up for Ray Charles and his beautiful legacy," he said. "Thank you for living."

British movie fans would be forgiven for feeling a little disappointed, after the UK challengers lost out in the major categories. Closer's Clive Owen and Hotel Rwanda's Sophie Okonedo both went home empty handed, along with Kate Winslet, who had been nominated for Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, and Vera Drake's Imelda Staunton.

There wasn't a glum face in to be seen in Hollywood Boulevard's Kodak Theatre, though, thanks to the comic talents of presenter Chris Rock. A roll-call of the industry's biggest names got something of a surprise when the irreverent funnyman kicked off the ceremony by barking: "Okay, okay, sit your asses down!".
