The screen veteran found herself basking in glory as Rachel Weisz, Lindsay Lohan and Charlize Theron all heaped praise on her at the Women In Hollywood Awards.
It was Charlize that made the biggest impression, though. The South African actress, who also received a gong at the ceremony, could barely contain her excitement when her turn came to take to the podium.
The Monster star provoked gasps of amazement from the audience when she suddenly declared, "I'm going to kiss your butt!", and ran down from the stage to plant a smacker on her idol Shirley's posterior. The movie legend was obviously much taken with the surprising gesture, as she gleefully responded: "That's the best kiss I've had in ten years!" .
A roll-call of A-listers were present to witness the hysterical moment. Among the big names gathered in the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton were Jane Seymour, Reese Witherspoon, Diane Lane and Welsh hunk Ioan Gruffudd.
Shirley was undoubtedly the star of the evening, however. Her audience gave a hearty round of applause when the 71-year-old promised never to quit acting, despite there being so few roles for mature women. "I would talk to the marketing people in the studios about it, but they're all around 12 years old," she quipped. |
