SJP shows her love for Matthew and James

As any parent knows, saying goodbye to your young child when you have to leave them behind, even for just a day, can be tough. Receiving an enthusiastic wave from her little boy James obviously made the experience easier for Sarah Jessica Parker when she set off from her New York home on Thursday morning, though.

The diminutive actress, with a beaming smile on her face, blew kisses to the youngster as he and his father Matthew Broderick waved her off from an upstairs window. And the three-year-old can look forward to spending much more time with his doting mum in the months ahead, because she has decided to restructure her working life to that end.

Shooting her last two movies, The Family Stone and Failure To Launch, required long trips to Los Angeles and New Orleans, and Sarah is determined not to repeat the experience. "It's a hardship to be far away," she explained. "My son's in school now, so my goal is to stay as close to home as possible, especially during the school year, and try not to work over summers."

The 40-year-old says she will be taking a few months off to dedicate all her energies to Matthew and James. "I've been working continuously for the last eight years or so," revealed the actress. "So I promised my family we'd spend a proper summer together."

Sarah doesn't have any misgivings about choosing such a demanding career, or indeed waving goodbye to her hit series Sex And The City, however. "When I made the very difficult decision to end the show, it was because I recognised it was important for me to focus on different things," she said. "Of course, now that I can make more movies, I also have a family. But it's such a good job and good life that I have, and I'm happy."
