KEVIN SPACEY TAKES FLIGHT IN NEW YORK

27 JUNE 2006

Having made his mark as an actor, director, screenwriter and, most recently, theatre boss, there's little doubt that Kevin Spacey is a man of many talents. The two-time Oscar winner managed to amaze even his biggest fans this week, though, after showing off some truly super-human abilities on the US chat show Late Night With David Letterman.

He took to the air in an effort to publicise his latest role as Superman's arch nemesis Lex Luther. The comic book hero, whose mind-boggling strength and ability to fly have always given him a distinct advantage over the villain, might have been forgiven for feeling a little concerned at the sight, but planet Krypton's most famous son can rest assured his old enemy remains somewhat limited when it comes to getting airborne. Indeed the 56-year-old actor only managed the feat by using a special sky-diving simulator which blasts powerful jets of air into the atmosphere above.

The renowned performer is no stranger to playing the baddie, having picked up numerous awards for his sinister roles in movies like Seven, The Usual Suspects and Ordinary Decent Criminal. Becoming the world's most devious crook brought with it some unique challenges, however, as the enigmatic star had to shave his head. "It's sort of weird – you can't stop touching it," he revealed. "It takes about a week to get used to and it's very hot. When you put your hand on your head and you have hair you don't feel it, but suddenly when you have no hair, it's like 'my head!'."
