If Kate Hudson was nursing a broken heart she certainly didn't show it.

The actress, who is rumoured to have split with her baseball player love Alex Rodriguez, was on radiant form at the New York premiere of Nine this week.

Blonde Kate wore a sequinned black and silver minidress with train, and her best smile as she walked the red carpet with mum Goldie Hawn.

Alex was noticeably absent from the event, and sources close to the sportsman have said the couple parted ways a week ago.

While both parties have remained tight-lipped about news of the end of their romance, there are contrasting reports about the reasons behind the split.

Some say Alex was concerned that Kate was more intent on building her personal profile than a relationship with him. Others however take the view that the actress felt "smothered" by the baseball player.

While Alex didn't attend, Madonna – to whom the sportsman was romantically linked in the past – was there.

She brought along her daughter Lourdes, who looked all grown up in a tasselled skirt, biker jacket and fingerless gloves which showed off her lime green nail varnish.

Kate's co-stars were also on hand. Penelope Cruz - who turned heads in a striking red satin gown - joined Daniel Day-Lewis and Marion Cotillard for a group photo. The trio have all been shortlisted for acting gongs in the upcoming Golden Globes.

Nicole Kidman, Dame Judi Dench and Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas completed the stellar lineup.
