Carey Mulligan and Leonardo DiCaprio take the lead at star-studded Great Gatsby premiere

02 MAY 2013

Heading up an incredible all-star cast, Carey Mulligan was every bit the glamourous leading lady at the grand unveiling of The Great Gatsby on Wednesday evening.

The British actress, 27, stole the show in a fitted red strapless dress, teamed with black peep-toe heels and delicate diamond earrings. Her hair was swept back into a chic undo, that helped draw the eye to her fresh, youthful complexion.

Carey — who has just celebrated her first wedding anniversary with musician Marcus Mumford — is said to have beaten some of Hollywood's biggest names to secure the part of Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrman's star-studded remake.

She appears opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, who has taken on the role of the protagonist, Jay Gatsby.

The talented actor, dapper in a suit and tie, also made a highly-anticipated appearance at the New York screening. He spent time talking to excited fans and having his picture taken before posing with Carey and their co-stars, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Amitabh Bachchan, and Isla Fisher for a cast photo.

Isla opted for a beautiful floral and black lace Dolce & Gabbana gown for the New York event. It perfectly complemented the flowery dress chosen by jewellery designer Jennifer Meyer, who arrived on the arm of her husband Tobey, the film's narrator Nick Carraway.

Music met the movies at the event, with representatives from the film's soundtrack also attending. Florence Welch and Emile Sande both made glamorous appearances at the screening, as did a very dapper Jay-Z. The rap superstar executively produced the soundtrack, which features a cover of the Amy Winehouse track, Back to Black, by his wife Beyonce.

A host of other famous faces turned out to show their support, from Anjelica Houston to Anna Wintour and Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence.

Already widely regarded as one of Hollywood's leading starlets, Carey has been effusive in her praise for co-star Leonardo and his performance at Gatsby.

"Leo's fabulous in everything — he's one of the greatest actors of our generation," she told Access Hollywood. "But he has gone further than you could ever have imagined with this character, and really made [Gatsby] so multi-dimensional, and so flawed and so vulnerable, and yet so macho and sexy — everything that you want in Gatsby.

"From the first audition, he was so incredibly generous and sweet and was helping me the whole way through."
