Carey Mulligan was the pinnacle of sophisticated chic at the Pre-Met Ball screening of The Great Gatsby at the Museum of Modern Art in New York on Sunday. The film’s leading lady opted for an androgynous tuxedo by Lanvin for the occasion, teaming her all black look with skyscraper heels.

With slick backed hair, Shame star Carey carried off her modernist edge with minimal make-up and no accessories.Opting for florals, singers Katy Perry and Kylie Minogue showed off their best side in spring-inspired two pieces. Wearing a violet floral headband, Firework singer Katy wore her monochrome two piece with effortless style to the stylish event. Kylie opted for a bolder selection for the event as she also rejected a conventional dress for a quirky silk shirt and trouser combo with a vibrant navy green and white print. The high-profile event also saw Vera Wang, Solange Knowles and Cuba Gooding Jr make their way through its doors.Man of the hour Baz Luhrmann was also in attendance with his wife, designer Catherine Martin. Catherine was another guest who had taken heed of the night’s androgynous theme, wearing polka trousers and a floral shirt as she walked down the red carpet, adorably matching her husband's navy coat and suit combination. It seems that the laid back look of the screening’s attendees could not have been more different to the 1920’s Gatsby glamour.

Entrusted with millions of pounds worth of jewellery while filming the F Scott Fitzgerald adaptation, Carey said that there was intense pressure to look after the ornate possessions. "I would be doing a scene, wearing these fabulous jewels from Tiffany's worth many, many millions,” the actress said to The Mail. "There'd be diamond bracelets on each arm, and diamond earrings, and rings, and strings of pearls around my neck. And I could see this guy in the corner watching me intently, in case I ran off with anything." The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway will officially premiere at Cannes Film Festival on 15 May.
