"I don't think anything can prepare you for the experience of what being the Doctor in Doctor Who is," said Matt who is preparing to hand over the role to Peter Capaldi. "But I think Peter is as ready as he can be."

"It was always going to be a difficult show to leave," Matt told the Metro. "Filming endings is sad and I've had such a ball and my mum wanted me to stay.

"But I think for me and my career, it's the right time. When a Doctor leaves, the show gets a new lick of paint and a new energy."

At just 26-years-of-age, Matt was the youngest actor ever to be cast as the famous time lord.

"It was quite sad at the end, obviously, when I had to leave," he said, speaking at the show's official 50th celebration at the ExCeL Centre. "But I think we've got a really moving story, a really great sense of adventure in it which I'm pleased about."

Thousands of Doctor Who fans descended on east London for the three-day celebration of the show, which is the world's longest-running science fiction programme.
