Happy Valley and EastEnders win big at TV Choice Awards

Happy Valley, Sherlock, and EastEnders were the big winners at the 18th TV Choice Awards on Monday.

The BBC shows took home Best New Drama and Best Actress for Happy Valley and its star Sarah Lancashire, Best Drama and Best Actor for Sherlock and Benedict Cumberbatch, and Best Soap, Best Soap Actor, and Best Soap Actress for EastEnders.

The celebrity event, held at the Park Lane Hotel in London, saw EastEnders Lindsey Coulson crowned Best Soap Actress. The star returned to the soap after a 13-year break, and has seen her character Carol battle breast cancer and fall for her first love, David Wickes, again.

Danny Dyer , who made an unforgettable entrance to Albert Square earlier this year, was awarded Best Soap Actor.It was also a big night for ITV, as Britain's Got Talent and I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here were also named winners, scooping Best Talent Show and Best Reality Show, respectively.

Celebrating its 18th year, the awards celebrate the last 12 months of TV, and were hosted by comedian David Mitchell. This year's Britain's Got Talent winners Collabro opened the show with a performance of Stars. Coronation Street gained two awards, for Kirsty-Leigh Porter as Best Newcomer, and for the heartbreaking storyline which followed the death of beloved Corrie character Hayley Cropper.

Former Corrie star and HELLO! Online blogger Michelle Keegan, Great British Bake Off  host Mary Berry, Strictly Come Dancing star Anton du Beke, and Patsy Kensit were all on hand to help dish out the prizes.

  • BEST FACTUAL ENTERTAINMENT & LIFESTYLE SHOW: EDUCATING YORKSHIRE 
  • BEST FOOD SHOW: GORDON RAMSAY’S HOME COOKING 
  • BEST INTERNATIONAL SHOW: GAME OF THRONES 
  • BEST SOAP NEWCOMER: KIRSTY-LEIGH PORTER 
  • BEST SOAP ACTRESS: LINDSEY COULSON
