Jamie Dornan joked about the reports that The Vampire Diaries actor Ian Somerhalder will be replacing him as Christian Grey in the 50 Shades of Grey franchise during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The show's host Jimmy Kimmel asked him about the reports, saying: "The next two 50 Shades of Grey movies… you are in those and then, supposedly I heard that Ian Solmerhalder was replacing you in those. Do you know anything about that? Is it true?"

The 34-year-old actor revealed it would be an "expensive mistake", joking: "That would be really hard for them to do, considering we shot both of the movies.

"That's an expensive mistake, I'll put it that way. But good luck to him — he'll be great!"

The star also opened up about fan attention, and how he can always sense if he is being approached by a 50 Shades fan in particular.

"There's a sort of energy in the eyes," he revealed. "It's like a hunger and you can sort of see it and smell it… It's terrifying."

The trailer for the second film in the franchise, Fifty Shades Darker, smashed records back in September as the highest viewed trailer in the first 24 hours of all time. The trailer for the film received 114 million views in the first 24 hours, beating Star Wars Episode VIII's record of 112 million.

The two-minute teaser shows Jamie's character Christian attempt to win Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) following the events of the first film.

He says: "I had no idea what this was going to become," while Ana says: "I don't see how this can work."
