Robert Pattinson has replaced his trademark floppy hair for an almost clean-shaven head. But fans of his signature locks will be glad to know that the Twilight actor's new hairstyle was for his role in new film The Rover. He has been filming the modern day Western in the Australian outback for the past seven weeks.

The film, in which he plays the role of a thief, was shot in the height of the sizzling Australian summer in the small town of Marree, around 400 miles north of Adelaide. The British actor, whose on-off relationship with Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart is the subject of much speculation, admitted that the remote location and conflicting time zones had affected his personal life. "Yeah, it's tough," he said. "But at the end of the day, it's only two months." But the challenging filming conditions didn't faze him. "It's added lots to the performance – being covered in dirt, pouring sweat, with tons of flies around," he said. "You lose your inhibitions quite quickly." The 26-year-old will now take a three-week break before beginning his next project. But while filming the $12 million production, it wasn't clear whether he had any plans to return to the US to be with Kristen. "Robert's beginning to get nervous about returning to LA and Kristen," a source was reported as saying. "He left in frosty circumstances and needs to make a decision on what to do next." Meanwhile Kristen has recently been spotted in LA spending time with Twilight co-star Taylor Lautner, Rob's onscreen rival. The pair spent a sunny afternoon at a baseball cage last week just days after spending an evening at a concert at Hollywood's legendary Troubadour club.

The uncertainty surrounding his relationship with 22-year-old Kristen comes as the author of the Twilight series Stephenie Meyer described the couple's level of fame as "tragic". The novelist discussed how the blockbuster film series drove its two lead characters to superstardom for better and for worse. The couple's romance was thrust into the spotlight last summer when Kristen admitted to and publicly apologised for a "momentary indiscretion" with film director Rupert Saunders, who is married to British model Liberty Ross. Robert's upcoming films include Queen of the Desert, with Naomi Watts and Jude Law, and Hold On To Me, with Carey Mulligan.
