TRACKING DOWN 007
Landing the role of the legendary spy was even more of a coup for Daniel than first appears, bearing in mind the calibre of the other silver screen hunks also in the running. Clive Owen, Ewan McGregor, Goran Visnjic and Gerard Butler were just a few of the famous faces under consideration. Meanwhile Australian heart-throb Hugh Jackman confessed to starting a rumour he was being considered, just to make sure his name was in the mix. And Pierce Brosnan, who was one of the most successful Bonds to date, likewise declared he wanted to make another outing in the role.

Producer Barbara Broccoli was apparently so impressed by Daniel's performance in the gangster flick Layer Cake (left) she decided he was the only man for the job, however. According to a memo leaked from her office, Eric Bana was ruled out on the grounds that he was not handsome enough, while Colin Farrell's reputation for hell-raising pushed him out of the loop. Daniel, on the other hand, was seen as "everything Bond should be", with his appeal defined in the following words: "He's sexy and charming and virile, but can also be dangerous."
