Be prepared for a shock… there was a time when TV's Dr McDreamy wasn't quite so dreamy. Patrick Dempsey, who plays sexy neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy, admits that his 40s are proving his best decade yet.

"My friends called me 'Amoeba' until junior high," he says. "I didn't really start growing until I left high school. Until I turned 35," he jokes. The hazel-eyed Maine native is now a prime-time heart-throb, but in 1990 there weren't so many women swooning over his clean-shaven looks and unruly curls.
