According to Colin Firth, when he was first offered the role of Darcy in the BBC adaptation of Pride And Prejudice, his brother incredulously remarked, "Darcy? But isn't he supposed to be sexy?".
The son of two university academics Colin certainly wasn't turning heads 20 years ago with his mousy hair and pale looks. All that changed when, aged 34, he donned breeches and stepped out of a lake, his shirt clinging to his body, in the role of brooding Fitzwilliam Darcy. Since then the romantic hero has continued to leave female audiences hot under the collar.
