At the 2003 Oscars, Nicole Kidman found herself tearfully grasping the Best Actress statuette, watched by her mother and daughter, who were both in the audience. It was the high point of a roller coaster 15 years, in which the ethereal actress climbed to the top of her profession.

The tenth-richest woman in Australia, she can cherry-pick her roles, gliding effortlessly between blockbusters like Cold Mountain and art house fare such as Dogville, with detours into the odd light-hearted picture like Bewitched "to entertain my children".

And as she received the coveted accolade, only one wish remained unfulfilled - her desire for a loving partnership. In an interview last year the 39-year-old star described how the end of her ten-year marriage to Tom Cruise - with whom she shared "a great love" - had left a void. Asked where she wanted her life to go, Nicole's reply was unequivocal: "Towards a relationship." In Country music star Keith Urban, the patrician blonde has found that partnership - and the future as a family she craved.
