The actor is not just your average chisel-jawed drama student. He comes from a family of distinguished intellectuals who endured the hardships of political persecution while fighting against apartheid in South Africa. The man who for a long while he believed was his father was acclaimed novelist Harry Bloom, whose efforts to help South Africa's embattled black population resulted in him spending time in prison. The family eventually fled to Britain, settling in Canterbury where Orlando was born. Just a few years later, in 1981, Bloom senior passed away. "Harry was a great man," says the actor. "It was as though he'd done his job and he left the world." |
