Tara used her own products to style the actress' hair

She may not have been up for any awards, but Marisa Tomei picked up plenty of style points for the Grecian-style gown she wore to the Baftas, its sleek, column shape counterbalanced with an unruly 'do.

And we caught up with celeb stylist Tara Smith who styled Marisa's hair and she explained how the shape of the gown dictated how she styled the star's hair on the night.

Tara started by applying her own Base Coat Serum, £4.99, while hair was wet to help protect it from the rain on the red carpet.

Then she used small curling tongs – with a 13mm barrel – on inch-wide sections all over the hair.

Hair at the front was coated with hairspray and left in its curl formation, while at the back Tara pulled her fingers through the curls to create a fuzzy mass that she then folded and gripped back into itself to form a pleat.

She left out the sections around the nape to give the shape a loose, free-flowing feel, finishing with Tara Smith Top Coat Glosser, £4.99, for "red-carpet shine", that, according to Tara, is essential when hair's looking fuzzed up.

"Then we looked at it with the dress and I pulled up some pieces - I was going to take it all up, but because the dress was off one shoulder it worked better being off at one side," explains Tara.

Tara Smith products are available Tesco.
