Not only did Michelle Obama cause a stir with a chic new hairstyle she debuted at a New York gala, the First Lady has also had style experts guessing as to what exactly she had done with her 'do. Did she go for the chop? Or was that just extra sleek styling, dressed into an updo? Either way, the look is stunning.

"I love it," says celeb stylist Lino at Daniel Galvin, London. "And it takes years off her – not that she needed it,"he adds. "It has far more of a softening effect on her face than her usual style." The problem with longer hair on longer face shapes – particularly if you also have quite a long forehead – is that it can have even more of a lengthening effect."

He continues: "The shortness and sharpness of this style, however, instantly lifts Michelle’s face and makes it almost ‘pop’ so it takes all the focus of the eye and looks really fresh and clean."

Lino says the one crucial trick to recreating this style is to blowdry root lift into the hair, either side of a side parting, before styling so it doesn’t lie flat against the head, using a large round brush and lifting hair up and out as you dry, directing the nozzle under each section and blasting hair at the roots.

Use a volumising spray at the roots, too. Then pull hair tightly back at the sides and – for the easiest way to dress hair smoothly and sleekly at the back – gather it all at the crown, use one hand to keep it in place as a pony tail, with the other twisting the tail upwards and inwards so it turns in on itself as you move down to the nape, securing the pleat you’re creating with grips tucked into the hair all the way.

Finish by smoothing over the surface of hair with a soft bristle brush and layering with lots of hairspray for shine.

This hairstyle looks gorgeous on her! She looks very chic and very confident. I would modify only one thing : limit number of necklaces to 3, maximum.
