Celebrity hair: Stars with pink locks

Share this:

Celebrities have been rocking pink hair for years now, but it has suddenly become the hair trend du jour. Dame Helen Mirren, 67, shocked the world when she stepped onto the red carpet at the BAFTAS in February showing a candyfloss-coloured crop. "I just thought it would be fun to dye my hair pink," said Helen. "I was watching America’s Next Top Model and the season where there were the British girls. Well the British girl who won, she had pink hair, and I thought, 'That looks really pretty.' So I'm copying her basically."

It didn't matter that her hair clashed with the red carpet. Helen just wanted a change, and other celebrities are jumping on the pink-hair bandwagon too. Kelly Osbourne, who used to sport a neon pink bob has toned her look down and gone for a fairer, lavender shade in recent months. Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards is known to lean towards the more purple hue too, but she shocked fans earlier this month when she posted pictures of herself on Twitter revealing dip-dyed pink locks.

"Fancied a bit of a change... Nice Ultra brights, shocking pink dip dye! #candyflosshair Perrie <3" she tweeted. Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw pledged to dye his hair for this month's Red Nose Day and went from brunette to bright pink. He raised £261,000 for Comic Relief and nicknamed himself 'Nick Grimaj', paying tribute to the Super Bass singer Nicki Minaj who has sported everything from a neon pink bob to longer pink tresses. Although the pink hair trend is getting bigger now, the colour in question has been around for decades, starting with the fearless standouts from the crowd, singers Pink and Gwen Stefani. The punk rockers made the colour mainstream with Pink certainly living up to her name, moving from a bright pink crop to more subtle streaks as she matured. Back in her No Doubt days, Gwen Stefani seesawed between two shades, rocking a pink-blonde combo, but now is well known for her plantinum blonde Hollywood hairstyle. So whether you like it or not, pink hair is not phasing out but just getting more and more popular. Celebrities all ages are shaking things up, and nowadays you don't have to be the rebel or Lady Gaga to pull off pink hair.
