Lily Allen's Christmas holiday in the Caribbean attracted plenty of paparazzi attention when photographs revealed her new relationship with art expert Jay Jopling.

Those same pictures also revealed Lily had toned up for the break – she's apparently dropped two dress sizes as a result of hypnotherapy to control her eating habits and using a PowerPlate to firm up.

Susan Hepburn, the hypnotherapist working with Lily during £300 sessions at her Harley Street practice, told Grazia magazine: "I taught Lily to favour healthy, low-fat meals instead of junk food and to see that alcohol… is just extra calories that sabotage your efforts to get a good body."

Clients are taught to use visualisation techniques to achieve their dream body – focusing positively on how they want to look, rather than negatively on how they do look.

They're also taught to eat slowly – it takes 20-30 minutes for the stomach to send signals that it's full, so chewing each mouthful 20 times and stopping between courses could be enough to reduce calorie intake.

Then, PowerPlates can help get the body in shape double-quick – the machines offer a more intensive workout in a shorter period of time, by transferring vibrations to muscles, enabling them to contract and relax up to 50 times a second in a reflex action.

A push-up, stomach crunch or leg squat, for instance, held for up to 60 seconds at a time on the machine activates multiple muscle groups simultaneously to improve strength, flexibility and tone.

From £20 for a 20-minute session in a salon or gym - although Virgin Active gyms offer sessions as part of membership - or from £995 to buy; visit www.powerplate.com or call 0207 586 7200 for details.
