Summer normally means sheerer textures and lighter finishes in make-up – what’s the point in caking it on when it's likely to slide off in the heat anyway? But if you feel more comfortable with at least one area of colour on your face to make your features look more alive and, well, polished, go for the lips.

In this area there are no sebaceous glands and skin, therefore, keeps hold of make-up as well as it does at any time of the year – depending on the product, of course. And now there’s a glut of long-lasting lippies being launched to ensure your mouth, at least, can help you look as though you’re keeping your cool. Just make sure you wear them with a lip pencil as the coverage and pigment is more intense than with most lip colours and so does have a tendency to feather.

Cameron Diaz was seen at the premiere of her new film, My Sister’s Keeper, wearing Revlon's new ColorStay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick, £8.99, in Top Tomato, which our chum, make-up artist Chase Aston, has been raving about. Applied with a sponge-tip, It is claimed to bring an end to the need for touch-ups with ‘food-proof’ wear for up to 12 hours. And it contains a conditioning complex so lips don’t become dried out beneath.

Bourjois So Delicate Lipcream, £7.82, feels feather-light on the lips, with a soft-foam applicator that delivers a cream texture containing powdered ‘microdots’ of colour that transform into a velvety, matte film. Coconut oil helps the formula moisturise for up to eight hours. However, we found that it does start to fade fairly quickly around the inside of the lips, leaving a ring of colour around the outside. The colours, though, are pretty and wearable, from neutrally pinks and beiges to rich berry.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Lipstick, £16, is more like a traditional lipstick – and is therefore the easiest to apply evenly - but with ‘polymeric technology’ to provide continuous, fade-resistant colour. It is our favourite, giving intense coverage without overly vivid pigmentation that does last and is comfortable to wear – but it feels slightly sticky and we did find ourselves chewing our lips a little the next day, which seems to happen often with long-lasting lip colour.
