Coachella 2013: Beauty survival kit

10 APRIL 2013

Although you may envisage music festivals to be synonymous with muddy boots and five days without a shower in sight, the likes of Emma Watson and Lily Collins never fail to impress with their fresh-faced festival style. There's certainly expectation of a shortage of style statements among the stars this year, especially as they soak up the sun at California's Coachella. So, before the music begins, here are our top beauty survival tips in the campsite…

Prep
Banish grimy nails by opting for a coat of this season's super bright nail varnish colours. Gel formulas in coral pinks or pastels will give your tips the ultimate springtime look while remaining relatively chip free for the whole weekend. Alternatively, for easy nail art on the go, Illamasqua's newest nail release, Speckled Nails, will give your talons a sweet treat and a cute mottled finish. You can also cut time getting ready in the campsite by treating your lashes and brows to a tint. The colour should last between four to six weeks without any sign panda-eye smudges.

Protect
While the Palm Springs sunshine may mark the start of a long summer of outdoor festivals to bask in the rays. Just remember not to let sun damage ruin your skin and top up your regular moisturiser or foundation with critical UVA and UVB defense by adding a broad spectrum sunscreen into the mix.

Hydrate
It's important to drink even more water than your regular six to eight glasses with all the dancing that will no doubt be involved during the long weekend. In addition to keeping hydrated on the inside, facial sprays are a great way to top up your moisture levels on the outside. Helping to fix your make-up in place this little miracle worker also helps to cool and refresh your face in a busy crowd.

Multitask
Reduce your festival make-up kit in an instant by picking products that double up in the way they can be applied. A blush stick which has a creamy texture is ideal for giving the cheeks a healthy summer glow but it can also be used as a lip stain. Nars also offer an array of shades in their Multiple products – a magic, multi-use cream for the eyes, lips and cheeks making it easy to create a range of looks that will take you from day to night.

Clean
The queues for showers at festivals can be a nightmare but camping out in the heat is what dry shampoo was made for. Give your hair a quick clean over with a spritz of volumising dry shampoo for extra body and to give second day hair the perfect texture to create pretty bohemian plaits.
