It’s over 25 years since the Dutch celebrated the wedding of the son or daughter of a monarch, so Laurentien Brinkhorst was welcomed in style when she married Queen Beatrix’s youngest son, Prince Constantijn, in The Hague.
The Prince, 31, has known his bride since childhood – their mothers were friends – and the couple met again when both were working in Brussels. Laurentien, 34, is the daughter of the Netherlands’ Minister of Agriculture.
Despite the bride and groom being a thoroughly modern couple – both have successful careers which they will continue to pursue – their wedding had many traditional touches. It was held in a church dating from the 15th century and there were escorted carriage processions, jewels, the pealing of ancient bells, cheering crowds and royal guests.
Many younger European royals were at the happy occasion, including the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and Crown Prince Philippe of Belgium.
For a look at all the pictures of the wedding of Prince Constantijn of the Netherlands, the new issue of HELLO! is on sale now.
