Few foresaw the resounding success of the Golden Jubilee celebrations as millions of Britons took to the streets for a breathtaking four days of pageantry and partying. The Queen, deeply moved by this display of affection, told of her "gratitude, respect and pride"

Four days of parties, pop and pageantry spread jubilation right across the nation when Britain celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne.

The Golden Jubilee festivities marked not just a milestone for the monarchy but also a turning point in its fortunes. Six months ago cynics predicted that this summer's planned ceremonies and street parties would disappear beneath a cloud of apathy. Even weather forecasters were predicting rain on the Queen's parade. How wrong they all were! The sun came out and so did millions of people, singing and dancing in the streets to demonstrate support for the Queen and her whole family.
