11 OCTOBER 2002
Eighteen days after two of Latin pop star Thalia’s sisters were kidnapped in Mexico City, one of the women has been set free by her captors.

Journalist Joaquin Lopez Doriga announced the development on Mexican TV Thursday night. “Laura Zapata is at home… and she is doing well,” said Doriga, adding that there had been no word on the status of the other kidnap victim, Ernestina Sodi.

The news was later confirmed by a federal district official, who said Laura, a famous actress in the Latin American country, had returned to her Tecamachalco home with no apparent injuries.

Laura and Ernestina were snatched in Mexico City on September 22, disappearing soon after leaving a local theatre where Laura was performing in a play.

Thalia, who is married to Sony record boss and Mariah Carey’s ex-husband Tommy Mattola, has not commented publicly on the situation.
