Hitch star Will Smith met with former South African president Nelson Mandela on Friday in the run-up to a star-studded AIDS benefit concert hosted by the rap artist-turned-actor.

A 20,000-strong crowd is expected at Saturday's Cape Town music fest, which features acts such as Annie Lennox, Queen, Katie Melua and India.Arie. Will's wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, is also slated to perform with her band Wicked Wisdom.

The global HIV/AIDS awareness campaign is dubbed "46664" – the number assigned to Mandela for the 18 years he was imprisoned on Robben Island during the era of apartheid in his country. The AIDS cause is particularly close to the statesman's heart as his son recently died from the disease.

Saturday's marathon concert is the second of its kind, and the first of a series of concerts planned around the world. Spain and Norway are set to host their own live 46664 music events in the coming months.

The inaugural concert in December 2003 featured Beyonce, The Corrs, Queen, Ms Dynamite and Anastacia, and reached a global audience of about two billion.
