According to newspaper reports, the singer announced her happy news to friends and loved ones at a lunch in Los Angeles last week. The father of the child, Sacha Gervasi, confirmed the rumours on Tuesday when he issued a statement declaring he would stand by both mother and child. "I fully intend to give Geri and the baby all the love and support they need," he said.

Sacha's romantic relationship with the singer is thought to have come to an end, but he intends to be the best father he possibly can. And the infant is sure to have showbiz running in his or her veins, because the dad-to-be is also a well-established figure in the entertainment industry.

The 39-year-old played drums with the rock band Bush, which enjoyed huge success in the United States, before making the switch to screenwriting. His movie credits include The Terminal, which starred Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and he has recently signed up to pen a big screen version of the Eighties soap opera Dallas.
