"There is a lot of one-upmanship going on, I have to say," the 47-year-old star tells chat show host Michael Parkinson in an interview set to air on Saturday. "You do have to learn to say 'I'm sorry', even when you don't mean it. And I'm telling you, if you say it even when you don't mean it, it really gets you a long way, okay. Just a little secret for everybody."

The Hung Up singer also recalled how Guy used three apparently fool-proof charms to conquer her heart – the first "aphrodisiac" being the film director's hunky physique.

"I saw him with his shirt off playing tennis, and that was a big plus," she recalled. "And then I sat next to him at a lunch, and he was incredibly witty – and that was another big plus. I think a sense of humour is important."

But apparently the Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels filmmaker's skill behind the cameras really sealed the deal. "Finally, I saw his first movie, and I thought, 'God, he's incredibly talented'. So those three things put together were a huge aphrodisiac."
