Michael Jackson has bought a new home off the coast of Bahrain. The iconic singer, who has put his California ranch up for sale, reportedly paid £860,000 for a quarter-acre site on the exclusive Amwaj islands which lie in the waters to the north of the oil-rich country.

The King of Pop decided to leave the United States after being cleared of child sex abuse charges in June this year. Since then he has been staying as a guest of the Bahraini royal family, which has made it easier for him to avoid the glare of media attention.

According to reports stateside Michael is planning to make the new purchase – which consists of two separate villas with seaside views – his permanent home. The property is part of a $1-billion development, built entirely on reclaimed land, that promises to become one of the world's most exclusive resorts.

The man-made archipelago has added nine-and-a-half kilometres of virgin beachfront to the tiny island state of Bahrain. Linked to the village of Qalali by a new road, the resort features over 1,000 residential plots, along with hotels, cinemas, health clubs and a Formula One racing track.
