When a 24-year-old Madonna Louise Ciccone performed at a London nightclub back in 1983, it is unlikely she imagined she'd be returning to the same stage over two decades later. Indeed the aspiring songstress would probably have felt a little disappointed if someone had told her that, after 22 years of hard work, she would still be playing to small crowds in such an intimate venue.

But Tuesday's concert in Koko, the nightspot where Madonna made her UK debut all those years ago, was no regular gig. Having firmly established herself as one of the pop industry's most iconic and influential figures, the legendary singer's return was a triumphant homecoming with all the fanfare and media attention you would expect for one of the world's biggest stars.
Now a permanent resident of the British capital, the 47-year-old has married a local boy and made her home in London. And if the reception she received at her latest concert was anything to go by, the citizens of her adopted homeland are delighted to have her as a guest. Pop fans queued all night outside the modest locale, which was previously known as Camden Palace, for the chance to see their idol strut her stuff.
These days Madonna also enjoys a rather more substantial budget than she did when she last paid a visit to the venue. The mum-of-two, who is currently promoting her new album Confessions On A Dancefloor, spent £20,000 on an after-show party at Nobu restaurant, while another £10,000 was spent on hiring top DJs Bodyrockers to join in the fun. |
