The show went on for queen of pop Madonna on Monday night, when – hours after hearing that the judge presiding over her adoption appeal had adjourned the case – the singer attended one of the biggest events in the US fashion calendar.

If the Material Girl was feeling downcast after hearing the news she certainly wasn't showing it as she arrived for the Big Apple annual Metropolitan Museum Of Art's Costume Institute Gala with a smile on her face.

And her choice of outfit – an eye-catching, Eighties-inspired navy blue ruched mini dress with a puffed skirt, teamed with thigh-high black boots and jewelled black fingerless gloves – ensured she was the centre of attention.

The ensemble – put together by her favourite design house Louis Vuitton – was finished off with a teal coloured hairpiece tied around a top knot.

Fifty-year-old Madonna must now wait to find out the outcome of her appeal against an earlier court decision blocking her adoption of four-year-old Mercy James.

Chief Justice Lovemore Munro of the Malawi Supreme Court adjourned the case after hearing submissions from the singer's legal team and human rights groups. No date was specified for when the ruling will be handed down.

The case centres around the law that foreigners wanting to adopt in Malawi must be resident in the country for at least 18 months.

During this week's hearing Madonna's lawyer urged the panel to consider the Mercy's welfare. "I concede that the petitioner is not resident in Malawi but I urge the court look at the best interest of the child," he said.
