News of her incredible rise to fame has had an impact across the globe, so when Susan Boyle touched down for the very first time in Japan on Tuesday the reception she received was extraordinary to say the least.

Aside from the screaming fans and bouquets of flowers thrust her way, the singing sensation also received two proposals of marriage.

After landing in Tokyo airport ahead of a guest appearance on a Japanese variety show - aired on New Year's Eve - the 48-year-old was approached by two admirers desperate to walk her down the aisle.

But neither unions were meant to be, and smiling Susan was ushered along by security.

"There is so much affection for Susan. She is an idol to us, everyone wants to meet her," said fan Akiyama Hanako, 56, who had waited seven hours to see the star.

"I was near the front but got pushed aside when she appeared. One gentlemen kept saying 'Susan, kekkon shite kudasai!' He was asking her to marry him over and over again."

"We have not seen scenes like it since the Beatles."

It is not just enamoured Japanese fans who have been proclaiming their love for the Scottish songstress.

Music's star-of-the-moment Lady Gaga has also been paying tribute, proclaiming herself a fan just like fellow stars Demi Moore and Oprah Winfrey.

"I love Susan Boyle. She is my woman of the year," the Bad Romance singer recently said. "She has achieved more in this year than most artists will in a lifetime."

"This time last year nobody even knew who she was and now she is knocking the world's most established artists off the album and singles charts."

It certainly has been a momentous year for Susan – her debut album I Dreamed A Dream was in the number one spot over Christmas.
