Born in Northern Ireland, Amanda, who attended Manchester Polytechnic's School of Film, TV and Theatre, got her first role in TV soap Brookside in 1982. She's been a ubiquitous face on the small screen in Britain ever since, appearing in shows such as Peak Practice and cementing her reputation as one of Britain's favourite actresses in Silent Witness. The latter role earned her a Most Popular Actress gong at the National Television Awards.
