Manchester-born actress Catherine Tyldesley came to the attention of British TV fans after her luminous beauty helped her beat 150 hopefuls to the role of Iris in the Twenties-set BBC drama. The former Birmingham School of Acting student's previous small screen roles had been limited to cameos in Coronation Street and Holby City. But she proved such a hit in the series about three sisters on the brink of womanhood in a post-WWI Liverpool that she was soon signed to Kiera Knightley's agent.
