Romance in the air for Brit TV stars John and Dawn

Some of British TV's favourite faces are tying the knot both on and off-screen in the run-up to the New Year. Torchwood hunk John Barrowman made a dashing groom as he celebrated a civil partnership with his architect partner Scott Gill.

Glasgow-born John, who lived in the US as a child, returned to his roots for his big day - donning a smart blue kilt and a heather buttonhole. The ceremony, which took place at the five-star St David's Hotel in Cardiff, put the seal on the pair's 16-year relationship.

Around 40 close friends and family including John's co-star Eve Myles were there to cheer on the happy couple. But there wasn't time to relax afterwards as the 38-year-old actor had to dash off to appear in a matinee performance of pantomime Jack And The Beanstalk two miles away. His partner stayed behind to celebrate with their guests, however. "Scott's already seen it twice," explained John.

Also heading up the aisle is Dawn French, 49. But it is her on-screen character Geraldine Granger who is getting hitched on New Year's Day in the last ever episode of The Vicar Of Dibley. After 12 years of being unlucky in love, Geraldine gets to tie the knot with Robin Hood star Richard Armitage in a special Doctor Who themed service.

The script has been penned by Love Actually scriptwriter Richard Curtis and is sure to be an emotional affair - not least for the hit sitcom's leading lady who is married in real life to funnyman Lenny Henry. "The Vicar has been a very life-affirming show for me, so knowing we won't be doing it again and that our little gang is disbanding, well, that made me a little teary," admits Dawn.
