Hattie Morahan, a rising star with the BBC, talks about featuring opposite Nicole Kidman in The Golden Compass and her red carpet style plans
You're described as one of the Beeb’s sensational newcomers. How does that feel?
"That’s a lovely thing to be described as! It’s just strange being called a newcomer because I graduated from university in 2000. But it’s obviously lovely to feel people like the BBC have faith in you."
What was it like working with Nicole Kidman on The Golden Compass, a fantasy adventure based on the Philip Pullman novel?
"It was thrilling to have scenes with Nicole - her performance was so subtle and nuanced. And she looks astonishingly beautiful in the flesh. She was also very generous and friendly with us all.
"I played Sister Clara, the head nurse at this sinister experimental station in the Arctic. She’s incredibly sweet on the surface, but actually a baddie – so it was a real treat to communicate that on screen."
Next up for you is a role as Elinor in a TV production of Sense And Sensibility and Bike Squad, a comedy-drama about a group of cycling coppers. Who do you play in that?
"My character is a lunatic mounted policewoman, who’s the love interest of one of the guys.
"She was a lot of fun - getting her kicks from riots and violence and non-PC things like that, while being completely unaware quite what a lunatic she is."
You’re also in The Bank Job, a heist movie-cum conspiracy thriller starring Jason Statham.
"This is an intriguing story of a Seventies bank robbery which was quickly covered up in the press because of the high-profile names involved.
"I play a real-life woman who was involved with the (criminals) but may also have been working undercover for the government. Colin Salmon was my love interest – and he’s such a dashing man so it was a lot of fun."
Have you got a red-carpet style thought out for the films' premieres?
"A very good friend of mine who’s a fashion designer has a label called Victim. She does very unusual, really exquisite creations and has often said if I can go to her if I need a dress."
Did your parents Christopher Morahan - director of the 1984 TV series Jewel In The Crown - and Anna Carteret, who appeared in police drama Juliet Bravo, ever try to dissuade you from acting?
"They were always keen to make it clear that acting wasn’t a stable job, that it has pitfalls. But they were supportive too - the first job I ever did was with my father."
You’re also engaged to an actor, Blake Ritson - the romantic lead in Mansfield Park.
"Yeah, we’ve both done (period dramas) now so we might steal the costumes and have a regency wedding!"
When’s the big day?
"There are no dates at the moment – we’re not very organised."
