Having appeared in big shows like Cracker and Heartbeat, as well as Emmerdale, you've already clocked up quite an impressive CV. What are your ambitions for the future?
"To continue enjoying acting and be successful, whether that’s in dramas or films."
| You've been playing Andy for ten years now - what are the things you like and dislike most about the character? |
| "I like his fiery character; he’s not afraid to say what he thinks and be strong in his feelings. Dislikes are that he’s too naïve at times, and his insecurities often lead to people walking all over him." |
If you could have dinner with any famous person, who would it be and why?
"I love cars, so to sit down with a famous rally driver like Colin McRae and talk cars all day and how he’s progressed in his profession, would be brilliant."
In years gone by Andy had some trouble fitting in with the other kids in Emmerdale. But did being a successful actor at such a young age make it difficult for you to fit in with other people your age?
"Sometimes I was just thought of as ‘that kid from Emmerdale' and I lost my own identity. I’ve had to grow up with that and the pressure that comes with it. But it’s made me into a stronger person and you get used to it."
What are the other benefits and pitfalls of being a child star?
"There are benefits in that people make an extra effort because of who you are - whether it’s at a shop or a local cinema. People are always willing to help a little bit more which is nice and flattering. Pitfalls are the confusion between Andy and Kelvin. I’m always associated with the character. If I’m being quiet then people think I’m stuck-up and if I’m loud they think I’m showing off, so sometimes you can’t win."
You've talked about your love of cars in other interviews – what kind of motor do you drive? And what would be your ultimate, fantasy car?
"I drive a boring Range Rover Sport. My fantasy car would be a Ferrari."
| Who are your favourite movie villains and which one would you most like to play? |
"I like Edward Norton. He’s not always a villain, but I like the way he plays the characters in his films. He can be seen as quite a villain but you tend to sympathise with his characters."
Is there a special lady in your life these days?
"Yes my girlfriend. She’s very special and her mum is great, too."
There's a lot of pressure on young celebs to look good – do you take an interest in fashion and style or are you more of a 'let it all hang out' kind of guy?
"I’m not really interested in particular styles. I tend to wear what I think I look good in and what I feel comfortable in."
