Born in Ruthin, Wales, Rhys scored his big break in the 1990 kids TV show Spatz, before making the jump to film five years later alongside Helen McCrory in Streetlife. The lanky star, whose parents were both teachers, studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and has starred in a number of Welsh productions, including movies shot entirely in Welsh – Rhys' first language
