Famous for: His inimitable portrayal of patriarch Jim in The Royle Family

Blackpool-born Ricky was a political activist in his younger days, serving a 15-month sentence for his role in a building workers' strike. His onscreen profile has been on the up-and-up since the Eighties when he landed a role in Liverpool-based soap Brookside, but it was his portrayal of The Royle Family patriarch which placed him firmly on the list of top TV talent. More recently he appeared as Tony Murphy in the fourth series of Down To Earth.
