Diana's boys are not only gaining a new mother figure in their lives, but of course a stepsister and brother. For Prince Charles the arrival of Laura in his family means he will finally have the daughter he always longed for. He is so fond of Laura that while she was travelling with a girlfriend through South America during her gap year, he used Foreign Office contacts when she needed urgent help and made sure she was brought safely home.

Several years ago all four children were reported to be very close, with William and Harry, then both at Eton, dropping round for dinner when they visited London. Then Tom Parker Bowles's dabbling in cocaine hit the headlines and Prince Charles was advised to keep his boys away from such a bad influence. He is even believed to have sent his godson a stern letter by way of reprimand. In her turn, it was Camilla who offered moral support and advice when Harry was later caught publicly smoking cannabis and indulging in under-age drinking.

Since then, Tom has cleaned up his act, and become a columnist and food writer, while Laura, who is in a long-term relationship with Harry Lopes, works in a London art gallery.

Tom became engaged last year to his long-term girlfriend Sara Buys and is planning to marry this autumn. Amazingly, his mother will now beat him down the aisle.
