Although Zara Phillips and Prince Harry were both in attendance at the Badminton Horse Trials over the weekend, it was their less high-profile cousin who attracted the most attention. Not a few heads were turned when Lady Gabriella Windsor arrived for the equestrian event with her boyfriend Aatish Taseer.
The couple were snapped gazing into each other's eyes and embracing as top riders from all over the world competed in the three-day event. Princess Michael's daughter first met the handsome journalist while studying at Brown University in Rhode Island while she was studying Spanish and English literature.
Born in Mumbai in 1980, Aatish is the son of Pakistani politician Salman Taseer and renowned journalist Tavleen Singh. The fact that his father was Muslim and his mother a prominent Sikh was frowned upon in conservative circles, but friends say neither he nor his parents are overly concerned about such social pressures.
Last year Gabriella was accompanied by her parents on a trip to India during which they are said to have met up with Tavleen. The pretty royal also stayed with his family in Delhi during the Diwali festival and her father is reported to have paid Aatish's mother another visit when a business trip took him to Mumbai in February.
With Aatish now living in London, where he works as an editor for Time magazine, the romance has led to speculation a wedding could be on the cards. But although Princess Michael has confirmed she would support such a union, royal watchers shouldn't expect a marriage linking English royalty to Indian aristocracy just yet. "I do like her boyfriend a lot," she affirmed. "But Gabriella is still so young – she doesn't think about getting married."
