Monegasque royals play Santa Claus

Since their brother Albert took on his new role as head of the principality of Monaco, Princesses Caroline and Stephanie have been keen to show he has their unequivocal support. Yesterday the royals were presenting a united front as the 47-year-old hosted a children's reception at his official residence, flanked by both sisters.

Local youngsters had been invited to pick up gifts and watch as the Christmas tree in the courtyard of the palace in Monte Carlo was lit up.

And as the siblings welcomed their young guests to the festive event it appeared the sadness, which has hung over the family since the loss of patriarch Prince Rainier, is lifting slightly. Although Stephanie appeared in a reflective mood, she'd teamed her smart black jacket and trousers with a vibrant red top - since her father's death she has largely stuck to sombre colours.

She also got into the spirit of things with a warm smile for the partygoers as they lined up to receive their presents. Earlier her sister Caroline crouched down to chat with the smallest guests face-to-face, while brother Albert playfully worked the crowd shaking hands as he went.
