Queen to get a taste of public opinion

Being the Queen of England brings with it many benefits, not the least of which is being able to have a top chef cook you the meal of your choice whenever you want. It seems Her Majesty will be submitting to the will of her subjects when she celebrates her 80th birthday on June 15, however.

A new television programme being launched by the BBC in April will bring 14 of the UK's most celebrated kitchen maestros together in an effort to find the "perfect" birthday lunch. Each one of the culinary experts will be dispatched to a different region of the country to collect local ingredients for an "innovative" birthday menu.

Once the food whizzes have designed their recipes, the public will be called on to vote on their favourite choices before the winning meal is served up at a glitzy luncheon in the heart of the capital. "The City of London is proud to honour Her Majesty on behalf of the nation on this very special occasion," said Lord Mayor David Brewer. "Food brings us all together and throughout this event the whole country can take part."

The series will be shown every weekday evening for a period of two months. And the sovereign can look forward to a truly delicious meal, as both Gary Rhodes and Antony Worrall Thompson are tipped to be among the celebrity chefs taking part.
