Princess Eugenie can give herself a well-deserved pat on the back after scoring high marks in her GCSEs. The Queen's granddaughter achieved two A*s in English language and art, as well as As in history, English literature and Religious Education and Bs in four other subjects.

On a Spanish holiday with her mother and sister, the 16-year-old student - who boards at the private Marlborough College in Wiltshire - was telephoned by her housemistress with the results. A spokesman for the Duchess of York said: "She's feeling relieved and really happy."

Meanwhile Harry Potter actress Emma Watson lived up to her character's bookish image by getting eight A* and two As in her exams. Emma, who portrays brainbox Hermione, juggled her studies with filming the blockbuster movies. Earlier this year she told fans how tough it was to stay motivated, saying: "I keep reminding myself how great it will feel once they are over and I get to put my books away for a short time - not very Hermione, I know."

But there's obviously some magic in the air on the set as last week the franchise's boy wizard Daniel Radcliffe conjured up three A-grades in his AS-levels.
