14 JULY 2009

Thousands of people turned out to help Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden celebrate her 32nd birthday on Tuesday afternoon. In keeping with tradition, supporters turned out waving flags and clutching bouquets of flowers for the princess who was, for the first time, escorted by her fiancé Daniel Westling on her special day .

Also joined by her mother and father, Queen Silvia and King Carl Gustaf, the radiant royal, wearing a lilac summer dress, received well wishes and gifts from the crowds who had gathered at her family's Solliden Palace summer residence for the annual celebration. The date, July 14, has become something of a national event in Sweden, and every year the Royal Court celebrates "Victoriadagen" (Victoria's Day).

In previous years, former gym owner Daniel, who met Victoria seven years ago, did not accompany his bride-to-be to her birthday celebrations. However, since announcing their engagement in April, Daniel has been more of a presence by Victoria's side, notably at official engagements.

And the handsome 35-year-old personal trainer was the perfect escort for the princess, looking to have fully recovered from the kidney transplant operation he underwent in May.
